I spent the end of my winter break in bed reading this book. Each story was drawn for by a different illustrator and I thought that Beauty & the Beast was exceptional in a bizarre, atypical kind of way. Overall it gave off this droopy, bloated and melting look like the famous watches. There were also a few jolting illustrations involving birds juxtapositioning themselves between classic, pretty, religious imagery and the grotesque, fearful side of superstition.

Beauty and her beast.

Unlike the Disney movie with petals falling off a rose, the rose in this story was one Beauty's father picked for her inside the gates of the Beast's palace. This indebted father so much that he had to choose between giving up his life to the Beast or convincing his daughter to live with Beast willingly, forever. She never fell in love with him despite his looks, and actually spent most of her time there rejecting his proposals and dreaming of a more handsome prince. It was only when she almost killed him through her selfishness that she realized she loved him. Or at least shouldn't let him die. Then he turned into that prince.. so I guess we'll never know.

Professionalism: Be the part. You are a model. Believe it, and in yourself.

Etiquette: Simply start with basic human consideration. Be where you say you are going to be, and be on time. If you have to cancel, call as early as possible, before your photographer has shelled out for location costs or wasted time preparing and setting up. Be focused, present, rested and coherent. I once had a shoot with a model who was clearly hung over. In hindsight, I would have preferred that she cancelled.

Input: Collaboration usually comes after knowing someone for a while, or having worked together before. Typically the concept of the shoot should have been planned ahead of time, but there is a lot you contribute by being expressive, natural, and comfortable in your skin. If you are new to modeling, there is a lot that you can learn simply by being focused and attentive, and that can help build a collaborative relationship. I don't mind questions and input, but I imagine this varies by photographer.

Preparedness: Be prepared to take direction. A good photographer should clue you in on what to expect in terms of location, circumstances, art direction and so forth. They should also be willing to share some portfolio work, and/or references, so that if you have any doubts about wanting to move forward you can address them beforehand.

Things that will make your pictures suck:

- If you hate your body.

- If you can't relax.

- If you are self-conscious.

- If you want me to make you look slimmer.

- If you only want me to shoot from certain angles

- If you don't trust your photographer.

How to be a Model

1. Decide what kind of model you want to be (if any).
Who you want to work with or for, if you are aiming to be compensated, what genres you see yourself modeling in and the bottom line most photographers will need to know - how much you will or will not show of your body. If you have trouble answering question one instead ask - what do you want to get out of modeling? This approach may give you additional points to consider.

2. Ask for a favor from a trusted friend with a camera.
I began modeling on Model Mayhem - though the site is free to join, they have an approval process with ->requirements and limit your number of submissions. Here's where your friend comes in. Plan and have a photo shoot to start your profile with. I will be writing up photo shoot tips from models and photographers as a sister post next!

3. Sign up for Model Mayhem and build your portfolio.
Friend, comment, look for events & local casting calls of interest. I found that simplicity was best when networking there. An email (you get 5 a day with a free account, hold yourself to it!) along with a friend request of a photographer you'd like to work with complimenting them genuinely on said work? That's a great way to start a professional relationship that could lead to some brilliant collaborations.

4. Refer to yourself as a model, because you are one.
However, don't let the title rule you. What do I mean? From showing up to a set with a list of demands like Mariah to being pressured into something you aren't comfortable with, be inventive with your circumstances and never hesitate to say no firmly if that is the answer.

TIPS

Research release forms to protect your rights and your image.
Become familiar with industry abbreviations like TFP.
Browse "the competition" in your size and area for more contacts.
Play nice and be polished with everyone you meet.
Always use your adjectives.

Great Grandma Melva

On our trip to Arizona my Grandma Nancy surprised myself and my two younger sisters with a big box of jewelry she was passing on from her mother, Melva. We all sat around the table and went through it, picking out what we liked and sometimes how much we all wanted one piece but "next time there's something I really like, you let me have it!" Here's the things I picked out.

It was interesting to see her style through jewelry and a sincere privilege to keep that style and memory alive through something wearable. I remember Melva as being a tiny, warm and gracious woman whos vanity smelled good enough to eat. Nancy told me her very first memory in her life was around 4 years old, looking up and seeing Melva wearing that pearl-backed brooch with her name written in gold. If I couldn't have taken but one thing it would have been that because of her story.

Isn't this impressive? She had an eye.

I really love the green and gold earrings that match the above necklace, the monocle style hologram rose, graduated pearl strand, the ghostly cameo of what looks like polished petrified wood and of course.. that cuckoo clock. Last but not least, the one thing we all wanted one of..

I've kept this around in my purse, in my backpack, with my make-up kit.. for months. Usually quotes and fortunes don't stick with me for very long, but this did. When I first read it I felt a flash of embarrassment. How many times has my sour tone and shortness with a clerk or customer service rep made their day that much worse? Or even more uncomfortable to consider, have I ever made someone cry? I remember being there, on the other end of the phone in a call center, hooked up to the dialer like life support, no break coming, weight on my mind from all directions and then I get that call.

Now it stands to remind me that we all have this fantastic power of influence over each other, like sparks of static electricity, small but noticeable.. and everywhere. So few by choice.

I thought about this quote in relation to this blog and those who choose to read it, and wished that I knew more about the people who do read. I made this post a while back about not really caring what readers want to see in a way that would guide my blog to be more about others, less about my own experience, and I thought -- inauthentic. I hope that that post hasn't made me seem unapproachable or uninterested. I realize a lot of the shit posted here must make no sense. That just can't be helped? Let me say a few things directly then.

1. I appreciate the people who read this blog, especially so if it gives you something positive to take with you when you leave.

2. I want to be more accessible and easy-going in online relations and with readers, hence me starting a Twitter and Facebook for the page.

3. With that I'm looking to be more relaxed in posting, stop choosing the "nothing or perfection" method and just give you that funky Beej appeal I have had trouble showing sometimes.

I only want to be unaware of the effect I have on others who read if it's their decision. Introduce yourself, please. Tell me what you like. How do you know me? What have you heard? Do you have any advice? What do you hate? Done one of my tutorials? Know me in real life? I want to know.

Recently I've been really inspired by the circus. I checked out a movie called Jumbo starring Doris Day and this only tripped me into it further. As I was watching it, all amazed and entertained, I thought about expression. I call my outfits girl costumes because that's what they are. Sometimes there's a story, sometimes a loose copy of one or even my own character. I moved away from trend in favor of style, now away from style in favor of expression. I'm trying to tell a story.

The movie struck a surprise chord with me though. As a fat person, you may have been referred to as an elephant. I have. Maybe you've been called Dumbo, hippo, gigantic, huge or giant. Did it make you feel like a freak? The fattest person in the world, come one come all? I know acceptance isn't so easy as phrases like "own it" make it seem. Perhaps you could try "don't be afraid to refer to it" instead. Refer to your fatness, your inspiration.. your expression.

If you just need someone to tell you that you may, in fact, be your own person and do with that what you wish you have my blessing. Be a clown, be an elephant, be the lady who rides the horse standing up.. just don't be afraid to refer to it.

Be big, be generous and be JUMBO!

During your trip back to seventies suburbia you hit a few strangely shaped meteors on the way. Blood slicked knuckle bones as big as watermelons, amorphous globs of molted flesh, white hot glass shards of a dull shaded rainbow. After I broke one of my most beloved cross pendants in a gallon ziplock bag with the rest of my tangled jewels I decided it was time to look up some DIY jewelry holder ideas. An image search turned up plenty of projects, one of which I tried with twigs. That's the trouble with shabby chic, if it's too cute it's usually too cute to be functional.

I didn't follow any tutorial since I wanted to creatively use what scraps I had around instead of needing something particular. Picture frames came up page after page and this is what I did with one from the dollar store.

1. Hot glue strips of stretch lace ribbon across the top half for earrings

2. Glue a panel of jersey on the bottom half

3. Glue one row of eyelet through the bottom half for brooches

4. Glue buttons above eyelet on jersey to hold rings

5. Glue strips of stretch lace ribbon underneath eyelet for bracelets and necklaces

The one thing I would have done differently is glued the stretch lace ribbon more taut to on the back of the glass panel and glued the jersey down better in-between the buttons. Easy fixes and an easy project.

I'm here thinking about what I can write to my readers to inspire but I'm lost for words, and lost myself. I'm simple layers in a short stack of despair. Uninspired, infantile and anxious. Circumstances are hungry and they've been eating well. Trying to shuck negativity in family, situations and habits is still loss and I'm grieving. I wanted to do a simple t-shirt surgery tutorial but bring something other than adding lace and giving it a more fitted bodice. So I sat and thought about what color my mana was today.. blue, the droplet symbol for an island. How could I interpret that into various elements of the modification? Splish..

You will need:
A t-shirt
A shape
Paper
Scissors
Straight pins or fabric chalk
Piece of cardboard

Draw and cut out your shape.

Cut your shape out of the neckline lengthwise.

Cut shape out of the sleeves.

Fold edges inside about half an inch and pin down to keep from rolling.

Sew neckline.

I love the unofficial heart monitor stitch.

When approaching corners, fold over the fabric to come into a right angle. While sewing slowly, stop in the crook of your corner with the needle down inside the fabric. Lift the foot, turn the piece, lower the foot and continue.

Mine was kinda sloppy, but you see it still works.

I keep seeing all these stringy spaghetti shred shirts everywhere. Here's how I made it happen in the shape. Laid it down and pinned a general outline. Here's where you could always use the chalk instead of pins.

Put a piece of cardboard underneath, inside shirt. Open scissors and scrape holes all along one edge for a point of entry.

Remove cardboard and using holes to start, cut across. Done. Shirts sold at Penny Arcade.

Approached open-mouthed, from the bottom left or in mid summersault these life changing moves I make have been giving off false impressions. Only in a case of strong bond do I even stutter to bother to correct them, but in true Beej fashion I'm going to break my own rule for self-preservation and bare a few shards.

Since living out in the splintery acreage of my Great Aunt's house in Arizona I've learned a few things. How to build a fire, hold an axe, about flying grasshoppers, the language of spiders, the importance of gloves, true darkness, personalities of goats, night lights, water wells, pumps, plumbing and breakers. Instead of incessant real talk radio it was real silence. Enough silence to choke out a monk. A space where even the smallest stars crash landed into the center of my pupils. I never lived somewhere where I regularly felt so challenged to get over my fears, do it myself and if I wouldn't (because I always could) then I'd have to live with it -- in that silence.
